Termite Prevention Checklist

termites

Termites – One of the more common pests in Singapore. Preventing a termite infestation can help you save a lot of money and time on repairs and damage control.

These are some recommended cost-effective preventive measures you can adopt to help prevent termites from causing massive destructions within your premises.

1. Prevent Moisture & Water Leaks

Moisture is one of the main reasons why termites enter homes. Water damages acts as an attractant and if there are termites within your premises, you would typically find them lurking in that area. Ensure that any leakages are fixed as soon as you notice them.

Air conditioning units cause moisture build in your surroundings, ensure that you air your premises regularly (with the AC turned off) if you utilise your air condition often. Clean your walls of any moisture of water condensation, this also helps prevent other common pests like booklice.

2. Limit wood to ground contact: Termite food source

Avoid having wooden structures, lattices, door and window frames that have direct contact with the ground. All wooden materials should be lifted off the ground to ensure that termites will not be able to consume them as it is a food source.

Should you not be able to do this, for example, you have in-built wooden floors in your landed property, always ensure that a property check with these concerns are highlighted prior to purchase or moving in.

If you have wooden furniture that is placed directly onto the ground, try to place a carpet beneath so prevent direct contact with the ground.

When buying second-hand wooden furniture, always make sure that you check for any hollow sounds when you knock on the wood. Do a thorough check of the furniture before purchasing as sometimes it can’t be detected in plain sight.

3. Seal gaps and cracks

Materials like wood, metal, PVC, and concrete expand and shrink differently at different times. This may result in gaps and cracks which provide termites an entry point into your premises.

Do a thorough, regular check to identify any gaps and seal them up immediately. Remove any damaged or rotting wood and replace them with termite-resistant materials such as steel or treated wood.

4. Remove Termite Food Source

What do termites consume? Cellulose in wood and other paper products.

Cutting off access to their food sources can prevent termites from settling and creating an infestation.

These are some practises you can adopt:

  • Remove and recycle any build-up of cardboard boxes, stacks of newspapers and paper products from your home.
  • Store important paper or wooden materials in upper levels of your home or on a lifted structure.
  • Remove any rotting wood, dead trees and leftover wood from construction from your garden and outdoor area

5. Get a Professional to Inspect Your Premises

While using this checklist to assist your efforts in termite prevention, it is also a good idea to get your premises inspected annually by a professional pest controller.

At Wipeout Pest Control Services apart from thorough checks and applied effective termite treatments, we are also able to locate termite infestations that cannot be seen with naked eye.

Infestations could be well buried beneath the ground or within walls and how we detect this is via our termite inspection equipment – Termiscan.

6 Ways to Rodent-Proof Your Home

rodent control

One of the most common pests in Singapore are Rodents, mainly Rattus norvegicus (Sewer Rat), Roof Rats and Mus musculus (House Mouse).

Rodents pose a high health risk knowing to spread more than 35 diseases through their faeces, saliva and urine. Protecting your home and family from these harmful pests is extremely essential. Should you discover a rodent infestation in your premises, engage a profession pest control company immediately to eliminate and control this infestation.

These are 6 ways you can protect your home and family from these harmful pests.

1. Check food storage areas

It’s easy to forget about the stored food items in your home, but rodents sure haven’t forgotten about them and can easily find them, chewing into food with soft packaging. Ensuring that your cupboards and other storage areas are properly organised and inspected is an important step in rodent prevention.

  • Store dry food or pet food in glass, metal or tougher plastic containers with sealed lids. These will be tougher to chew through.
  • Raise food storage items off the ground.
  • Properly seal any seasonal storage items to prevent rodent nesting.
  • Avoid using cardboard boxes that can easily be accessed.

2. Indoor inspection & tidying

Rodents are definitely not the ideal guests to invite into your homes. Indoor settings need to be tidied and cleaned regularly to prevent any form of rodent nesting and infestation.

Rooms, closets and cluttered areas need to be checked and inspected regularly for any rodent droppings or chewed off materials.

Holes and cracks in walls need to be patched up should there be any access point for any type of pest to enter your home. These are some other preventive measures you can adopt:

  • Regularly sanitise countertops and keep them clear of food
  • Do not leave uncovered glasses of water out overnight
  • Keep rubbish bags and dustbins clean and covered
  • Regular cleaning of areas that collect moisture

3. Outdoor maintenance

As important as your indoor premises, outdoor areas within your premises need to be kept clean and inspected regularly. Outdoor areas are the first “step” for rodents to gain entry your home.

At times, even though you’ve kept the inside of your home clean, these pests could be attracted to something outside your home which then leads to an infestation indoors and outdoors.

These are some preventive measures you can adopt for outdoor areas:

  •  Regularly trim overgrown vegetation and lawn to prevent hiding spots for rodents.
  • Clean up any pet food, food droppings or fallen fruit in your garden or yard.
  • Remove any unused outdoor equipment and debris.
  • Keep roof gutter clean and free of leaves and decompositions.
  •

4. Seal Common Access Points

Fun fact.. did you know, rats can squeeze through ½  inch openings and mice can squeeze through ¼ inch openings? We don’t know how that’s possible, but they’re able to!

The best ways to keep rodents from entering your premises is to make it impossible for them to gain entry. Inspect common rodent entering points. Gaps at the bottom of doors provide rodents an easy access into your premises.

These are some preventive measures you can adopt:

  • Repair and seal all cracks and gaps in walls and in your basement (if you have one).
  • Caulk holes even minor ones that lead to any appliances – rodents love chewing on wires.
  • You can get caulk from your nearest hardware or home improvement shop or order online.

5. Inspect for any rodent burrows

When it comes to dwelling habits, you can easily spot a rodent burrow outside your home or in your surrounding outdoor areas. The entrance of the borrow has a diameter of 2 – 4 inches in diameter and has a depth to it. Should you spot one or more of these burrows, call a pest control expert immediately. Refrain from aggravating the burrows or meddling with it.

Am I having a bed bugs infestation?

What Are Bed Bugs?

Small red bumps, consistent itching all over your body, and a reoccurrence of bites overnight? You might be having a bed bugs infestation…

Bed bugs are small, oval-shaped insects that feed on the blood of animals or humans. Adult bed bugs are flat and resemble the size of an apple seed. After feeding their bodies tend to swell up and become a reddish colour.

Female bed bugs are known to lay hundreds of eggs which is about the size of a speck of dust, invisible to the human eye. Bed bugs are most commonly found in vicinities where a large volume of people come and go.

Considering their size, they have the ability to hide in between things such as small crevices, furniture, luggages and even clothing which may be a nuisance to find during a suspected bed bug infestation.

We recommend immediate attention should you
be experiencing a bed bug infestation within your premises.

What do bed bugs bites look like?

Bed bugs bites can typically be visible on exposed body areas during sleep such as your legs, arms, shoulders, hands, neck and face. The severity of each bed bug bite depends on your skin type, some may not feel the bites till a day or two, others who tend to have more hypersensitive skin can visibly see and feel bed bug bites almost immediately.

Bed bugs bites can have typical appearances:

  • Bump with a clear center
  • Red bumps with a dark center and lightened a swollen surrounding area
  • Red bumps with blisters and hives

If severe swelling or inflammation persists, seek
medical attention immediately.

What are the signs of an infestation?

As bed bugs are nocturnal insects, they only
emerge from their hiding spots at night. In the day, they stay hidden in cracks
and dark areas in between your bed and furniture.

Common signs of a bed bug infestation :

  • Dark stains on the mattress and surrounding area
  • Bloodstains on your bed sheets or pillowcases
  • Dark spots of bed bug excrement on mattresses, bed, bedsheets, clothes and wall
  • Bedbug faecal spots, eggshells, or shed skins in areas where bedbugs hide
  • An unpleasant, musty odor from the bugs’ scent glands
  • Live insects, usually about 5mm long

Call an Expert

Unfortunately, unlike common pests such as cockroaches and ants, there is no insecticide that can permanently remove a bed bug infestation. Yes, an off the shelf product may kill a couple of bed bugs on the spot, however, this is not a proposed solution.

This includes a thorough inspection of your infestation and misting treatment of the entire vicinity with a 7- day reinspection process. It is a common procedure for them to be pushed out of their hiding spots after our misting treatment.
